The Girona region is a land of traditional liqueurs, especially ratafia, a hydroalcoholic maceration based on green walnuts, herbs, fruit and spices. Ratafia is the distillation of the landscape in which it is made. Today, it is a very popular liqueur from a commercial perspective. It is traditionally made around Saint John’s Day, when the nuts are green, and towards the end of the year there are massive fairs held to celebrate this beverage, like the Festa de la Ratafia in Santa Coloma de Farners and the Fira de la Ratafia in Besal\u00fa. Ratafia has inspired some delicious aiguardents (literally firewater).<\/h6>\n

Even the gins made in the Girona region are closely linked to the landscape. Among the spirits are some eminently indigenous proposals, produced using local raw materials, such as an apple brandy made from the fruit of the PGI Poma de Girona. This PGI also produces apple juices from the various varieties cultivated in the area.<\/p>\n

The craft beer boom has also led to the creation of microbreweries, cerveteques<\/em> and brew pubs all over the country. Entrepreneurs are venturing into hop plantations, in an attempt to fully express the local character of a universal product.<\/p>\n
